I have many great memories of Clarke, in particular, great memories of the many wonderful people I met there.
After Clarke I went to U. of Southern Miss for a couple of years, then into the military (Vietnam). Came back to school at U. of South Alabama where I got degrees in advertising design and sculpture. Worked in advertising for several years, then moved into public relations. For the past 30 years I've been at the U. of South Alabama where I am associate director of PR. I plan to retire at the end of June, 2012.
My wife, JoAnn, and I have two grown children (is that an oxymoron?) and three grandchildren. We have lived in Mobile, AL for the past 35 years.
In the past few months I've had the chance to renew some old Clarke friendships in person, via phone and on-line. It's been great. I am really looking forward to the 66-67-68 reunion coming up July 27-28, 2012. I encourage everybody to make plans to attend.

This Web site is such a great idea. It is so sad to think of all those buildings with all their memories being torn down. We all still have our wonderful memories. My husband, Sam (didn't attend Clarke but visited me on Campus often), and I live in Columbus, MS. We are members of First Baptist where we work in the Youth Department. We have two children, Bryan and Lou Ann Laffoon live in Starkville, MS and have our precious granddaughter Riley Elizabeth, age 1. David and Tori Laffoon Alexander live in Tupelo, MS and work with Hispanics in North MS through this MS Baptist Convention Board. I would love to hear from anyone who graduated in 1965-1967 or any years around those.

Our family now lives in Jackson, TN and I was not aware there was a Clarke web site until I received the latest issue of Carey Capsules. Was saddened to learn that the buildings were torn down. And am wondering why? Would love to hear from any one attending from 1965 to 1967. I have been married to Tucker Martin from Mantee, MS for over 30 years and we have one son John Martin who lives in Birmingham, Ala. I am still teaching with the Jackson Madison County Schools. After 31 years in this profession, I am looking forward to retirement. Was wondering if any one had news of Sunanta and Supatra ( sisters from Thailand that attended Clarke while we were there). Also Vickie Awais from Jordan. Would enjoy hearing from anyone, but was just wondering about those 3 girls. Please write me at the email below.

Message: My Dad and I lived on campus in a little duplex from the summer of 1965 until his graduation in 1967. My Mother (Vera Mantile Sledge) attended Clarke in the late 30's early 40's. d.1964. Dad re-married while pastoring a little church outside Chunky, Ms.
We left Ms after Dad's graduation for Marshall, Tx. Loaded up a 1951 International pickup with plywood sides to hold our possessions. The Bill Savati family from Clarke via Rochester, NY helped us move. Their old Chevy was loaded down also, complete with 2 beehives tied to the roof. Dad was a student preacher (wasn't just about everyone?), pastored and attended ETBC (East Tx Baptist College or as we knew it - Eggs Toast and Bacon College.
Traveling nearly every Sunday as a student preacher was an experience like no other for both of us. I learned not every one in the South can fry chicken. But they will all try. To this day I can't eat chicken on Sunday.
Dad became Chaplain for the Missouri Disabled American Veterans chapter, pastored several SBC churches throughout Mo. He has published a fiction (?) novel "Mr. S. I. X." and has several manuscripts in the works. Now in Mt Vernon, Mo. he continues to counsel young and old alike on living and being alive through God's Grace.
While living at Clarke I recall riding my bicycle everywhere, building our own skateboards, mowing yards for a dollar or two all over town (sometimes our only cash flow), Dad being paid in fresh vegetables for preaching, prayer meetings, having a crush on Mary Jane Hill and a little red head named Freda. Watching the baseball and basketball games, prayer meetings. Dad working at Clarke for tuition and fixing me an egg sandwich with borrowed bread and eggs. Payer meetings. Watching Gunsmoke on Saturday nights.
Times were turbulent in Ms during the mid 60's. We were poor yet rich in love and fellowship. We learned. We wept. We rejoiced. Clarke was a rock for us.
During the 70's we set up a scholarship in my mother's name. Trouble was brewing for the college's future, our lives were being blessed. Sorrow and joy accompany the passing of Clarke. As we are taught in God's word we weep for a child to be born into a world full of sin and rejoice in the passing of our beloved who will reap their reward for eternity with the Lord.
Our memories ease the pain of Clarkes passing. We rejoice in the fact the struggle for Clarke to survive is over. Our efforts can be redirected and strengthened as we support other schools so young people can build their own memories and fight for the Lord as true Christian Soldiers.
"Let us pray."

After Clarke I graduated from Samford, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary & Princeton Seminary. Taught at Mississippi College, NOBTS & currently serve as Division Director & instructor at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, MS.
Also, I have served several churches as pastor or administrator, primarily in southern LA, Dothan, AL, Statesville, NC & currently serve part-time as the Baptist pastor of the Nesbit Presbyterian Church which is about 20 miles north of Senatobia.
Jane (my wife) and I were married 40 years on 12-31-11. David (our son), his wife and three children live in Tuscumbia, AL where he has a State Farm Agency. Amanda (our daughter), her husband and Reed (grandson) live in Dothan, AL.
Jane and I have bought our retirement home in Dothan. I live in an apartment in Senatobia where Jane is in and out. Our life of teaching & ministry continues to be fulfilling. God has blessed us in many ways.
My Clarke College experience was meaningful and most enjoyable, primarily because of all the wonderful people I met there. I look forward to reconnecting and learning the stories of friends at our 45 year class reunion on July 27 at FBC & 28 at the old Clarke Campus.
I wish the best to you and yours.

Just wanted to apologize to anyone I upset with my first post.(See below this post) I stated I was saddened by the loss of my friend Jack Ray Garvin. I got the best news I have had all year when Chick Brown informed me this afternoon I was given incorrect information when I was in Newton in 2005, and Jack was indeed still with us. Chick gave me Jacks phone number and I had an incredible conversation with Jack Ray this very evening. Again to anyone I upset with the false information, please accept my heart felt apology. I too was crushed when I was given the incorrect information at the old Newton train station which is now the Chamber of Comerce Visitor Center for Newton. I look forward to our upcoming reunion, again please accept my apology.

CMC, great memories of some of the truly nicest people I've been blessed to know. Came to Clarke with a lot of rough edges, no self confidence, and feeling out of place. The people I met and studied with over the next two years transformed me in many ways, both from an academic and spiritual perspective. I left Clarke and transferred to Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. I graduated from IWU with a B.F.A. in Theatre Performing Arts in 1970. Got drafted and spent 1 year, 8 months, and 28 days (but who was counting?) in the U.S. Army. No jobs when I came home to Waukegan in 1973, so I traveled to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and was a lumber jack for a bit, then a carpenter, roofer, teamster etc.. Settled down and eventually had a career at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, IL in QA upper management, retired after 25 years at the age of 50. Married for 36 years to Susan Jane Beguin who graduated (under grad/graduate school) from Northern Illinois University. We're the parents of two children. Rachel Louise (29)a graduate of Indiana University (Communications and Cultures/English Literature) lives in Chicago and has blessed us with a two year old grand daughter Isabelle Rose, and a five month old grandson, Finn William. Our son, Kyle Robert (24)graduated from the University of Montana (Media Arts/Entertainment Management) currently lives in Mobile, Alabama and has a film/media business (Frame of Line, LLC). After retiring I was called back to work through the Archdiocese of Chicago and spent nine years as the Director of the Retreat Center at St. Benedict's Abbey in Benet Lake, Wisconsin. While working in the retreat ministry at the Order of St. Benedict monastery I went back to graduate school and earned a Master of Pastoral Studies degree, and then went back to earn an MA in Roman Catholic Theology, both from Loyola University, Chicago. When Kyle left home to study in Montana I retired again, hopefully for the last time. Susie and I then moved to central Illinois and live on Lake Bloomington, near Hudson, and Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. I spend my time now as a professional actor, writer, and can be found in the good weather (Illinois?) in a fishing boat, and the first of October until mid January in a tree deer hunting with my fraternity Brothers (Sigma Chi). I just had the greatest one hour telephone visit with Chick Brown last Saturday when I was babysitting and am stoked regarding the possibility of a reunion in July. What a pleasure to speak to Chick, it was as if 40+ years evaporated, what a true Christian gentleman. My last visit to Newton was in 2005, I paid my respects at the grave of my best friend at CMC, Jack Ray Garvin. I hope to hear from any classmates who want to reconnect, and wish all the best.

As of January 1, 2010, I have refocused my ministry. Instead of serving on pastoral staff I will work with retreats, pulpit supply, concerts, etc. I am currently booked for church retreats and pastoral retreats in Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Oregon and Tennessee in 2010. I am also scheduled for other speaking engagements in Florida, Mississippi, Oregon and Tennessee. I plan to enjoy a "Trip of Memories" in the Spring of 2010 as I return to Mississippi and the places where I was born and lived until the age of 20.
My book, Contemptus Mundi, will be released in the summer of 2010. My book, Living in the Freedom of the Laws, an in depth study of the Ten Commandments is scheduled for release in either late 2010 or early 2011.
Last pastorate was as Interim Pastor of St. Luke's Community Church in Jacksonville, Florida, May 1, 2008 until December 27, 2009.
I have lived in St. Augustine, Florida since 2000 when I semi-retired due to poor health. Was forced into semi-retirement in 2002 after being diagnosed with "bone death" and having major surgeries for joint replacements. Also 2 strokes from which I totally recovered! God is good!!
One 36-year old son, David Terrell, and four grandchildren, in Wasilla, Alaska.
God has blessed me to be able to travel, study and minister across the USA and UK. I hold a Doctor of Music from Ashwood Conservatory of Music, New York City and Ph.D. in Religion from Canterbury, in England. Returned to England in August of 2009 where I received an honorary Doctor of Humanities for my 24 years of work with people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. While I was at Canterbury I also taught 2 Christian Ethics lectures and a class of doctoral ministerial students on expository preaching.
Published poet and essayist. Also recorded two CD's of live organ and piano performance.
Have worked as Minister of Music, Organist/Choirmaster, Youth Pastor, Pastor of Worship Arts, Pastor of Outreach Ministries, Associate Pastor,Interim Pastor, and/or concert organist since 1966.
My life has been filled with so many wonderful blessings for which I am most grateful.

I learned of this website from Nancy Gavin James, a friend and co-worker.
I am excited to see some sweet names from the past and refresh some wonderful memories. My Clarke roomate,Doris Crowley Breland, and I have stayed in touch through the years. I am now teaching first grade-looking forward to a retirement someday. Nelson and I were married 34 years, but are married no longer. We have 2 wonderful kids-Marci Leigh Crozier Ulmer who is now in Heaven. Her death was incredibly sad. She lived to be happily married 8 years and gifted us with a wonderful granddaughter-Karsyn Neely Ulmer-a sunbeam in our family. Our son Kevin is married with 2 equally beautiful and bright children-Cole(3) and Daleigh(2). He is a full time Firefighter and a part-time Minister to Young Adults in his church. He is married to April, who is a great mom and a Kindergarten teacher. Our son-in-law remarried to a great girl who brought to our family Emily(11)another granddaughter. The GRAND total is 4 now and I simply love being a "Marmy". God has been merciful to me and I am so blessed to have been a small part of such a great Jr. College.
My Clarke memories are of very caring faculty beautful music, good friends spiritual growth, and a love for missions. Who could ever forget the lighting of the star?? There are milestones and anchors in my heart from God leading me there and teaching me there.
My good friend Doris is now a widow. Donald died last year and she is retired and caring for her mom who lives with her in Griffin Ga. I plan to let her know about this website. She's been great friend since we were in the nursery at church together in Griffin, GA. Blessings to all.

It seems that Clarke was so long ago but as everyone else has said, all of the memories are warm. It was a time and place that will live on in our memories as nothing has before or since. I married Mickey Given (class of 1969) and we have two children, Ryan and Kelly. Ryan graduated from MSU and Kelly from Ole Miss. Mick and I still live on the family farm in Potts Camp where we are in the 'sod' business. I graduated from Ole Miss in Accounting and have worked most of my life in the furniture business, currently at Bench Craft in Blue Mountain, MS. We would love to hear from any of our classmates and receive updates.
